Arrival at the selected airport. Meet and greet at the airport and transfer by private minibus (approximately 1.5 hours) to the hamlet of Kukkola, on the Tornio River, where you'll settle into your studio apartment sleeping 2, 3, or 6 people. The apartments for 2 and 3 people are equipped with a kitchenette, living area, 2 or 3 twin beds, and a bathroom with shower. The apartments for 6 people are divided into 3 twin bedrooms, one with a private bathroom (bathroom with shower), and the other two with a shared bathroom and shower.
During the transfer, you'll be served a traditional dinner, during which our guide will explain the fishing program. Upon arrival, you'll be ready to explore the area thanks to the incredibly long days: from June to mid-August, it never gets dark, not even after midnight (the so-called "white night" phenomenon). From mid-August onward, during the darkest hours (around solar midnight), you might be able to spot the first Northern Lights after the long summer break! If they're visible, we'll guide you through this incredible phenomenon, which not many people realize can be seen from mid-August onward.
After a buffet breakfast, we'll head to the banks of the Tornio River to begin our first day of fishing. The Tornio is the longest river in Lapland, at 522 kilometers long and covering over 40,000 square kilometers. Fishing is a traditional activity in the Tornio Valley, practiced the same way for centuries. The river is rich in fish year-round. In late summer, the most prized species are pike, whitefish, grayling, and perch.
Fishing is done from the shore (for grayling, pike, and perch) or from a rowboat, which allows you to cast your line in deeper areas (where salmon swim). Our guide will show you how to use the boat, provide you with fishing gear if you don't have it (rental fee applies), and show you the best spots for successful fishing. The first two hours will be guided, after which you can continue independently, after purchasing your fishing license (payment on site in cash or by card).
Lunch will be free (you can easily return to the apartment if necessary). In the afternoon, you can fish freely around the property or join an optional excursion: a fascinating urban trek through the town of Tornio, which boasts a remarkable history. We'll visit the historic center, the beautiful 17th-century church, and learn all about the world's most open border, spanning two time zones! From late July onward (whitefish season), we'll be able to witness the ritual of dividing the catch—a tradition that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll also be able to meet fishermen and watch them fishing with the help of a net.
The dinner will feature grilled whitefish, prepared traditionally on a spit over an open fire, and you'll have the option of fishing independently during the twilight hours. A traditional sauna will be available to you every evening, but you'll need to heat it yourself.
After breakfast, you'll have the morning at your disposal to try your hand at fishing, using various techniques and in various locations along the banks of the Tornio River.
In the afternoon, you can take an optional excursion: we'll transfer by barge or car to the Swedish shore, where we can visit the historic village of Kukkola, with its interesting buildings, including the old mill, sawmill, stable, and the small but interesting fish museum. Here, you can try your hand at traditional net fishing (guided activity included in the price).
Afterwards, a traditional dinner will be served in the property's splendid restaurant, after which you can continue your fishing during the white night, or, weather permitting, enjoy the Northern Lights or the white night.
After breakfast, you'll have free time for fishing throughout the morning. The barge will be at your disposal for the first few hours. In the afternoon, you can take an optional excursion to a husky farm located about an hour's drive away. Here, we'll take a guided tour where you'll learn all about these wonderful animals. We'll also take an easy guided dog walk through the beautiful ancient forest surrounding the farm. Dinner will be served at the farm's restaurant, after which we'll return to our cottage for a final fishing session, or perhaps to observe the Northern Lights.
After breakfast, transfer to the departure airport for your return flight. End of tour.
