From Lapland to North Cape - 10 Days

From Lapland to North Cape

Travel to North Cape in Summer: on Giuseppe Acerbi’s paths. North Cape is a place full of energy, it’s the place where ”Europe ends”

The name ”North Cape” was given by the English explorer Richard Chancellor, who baptised the place after landing there in 1553, during the expedition looking for ”northwest passage”. He died during a storm, trying to open the way for other explorers.

But Cape North was actually made famous by two Italian explorers: the first one, Francesco Negri, was a anthropology and biology pupils, who arrived in Cape North sailing in 1663. He was sure that in this area it was not possible to live but he found Lapland’s inhabitant! He learned how to ski, a practice that was still unknown.

The second explorer was Giuseppe Acerbi, from Mantua, who got there with his friend Bernardo Bellotti. It was the first expedition non via water, in 1789. During is travel, Acerbi learned about sauna and he shared it with the world. Sauna and ski are now the two only words, in Finnish and Norwegian, that are used in all the languages in the world, and thanks to two italians!
